For the last decade, Robin Saville has made his mark as one half of the heralded downtempo group ISAN. Peasgood Nonsuch is his debut album, and it's more of the gentle, dare I say cute, melodic electronic music that made the ISAN project such a success, even in a time when their music was always slotted next to rougher-edged IDM. To distance his debut from, say, Meet Next Life, Robin's placed a lot of emphasis on actual instruments, which tango with the drum machines and precious synth work in a completely organic manner that brings new life to an old framework. Don't get me wrong; I wouldn't bat an eye if you told me this was the latest ISAN record, but the addition of instruments in a more prominent fashion on this record makes for a more intriguing listen than the last couple of ISAN records, an approach I hope Robin brings with him his next turn with Antony. Robin's made an effort to do more than tide you over until the next ISAN record, he's gone ahead and one-upped the project he's dedicated 11+ years to.
