The highly heralded 2562 finally releases his debut album on Pinch's Tectonic label after a string of successful 12"'s. 2562's music so far has been firmly entrenched between the increasingly blurry lines of minimal techno and dubstep, along with artists like Shackleton and Peverelist. But upon firing up Aerial, it's readily apparent that 2562 seems to be taking a step back to the root sounds of dub. It's not until track three "Moog Dub" that the dubstep arrives, and it's probably as close to Skream as Tectonic will ever get. If you blinked and missed out on those limited 2562 vinyls, four tracks reappear here, the most impressive being "Techno Dread", a dubstep meets techno landmark, with bass so wobbly it makes you fill like you're on a boat that's about to topple. Even with the strength of 2562's previous singles, some of the new material matches that quality easily, especially "Basin Dub" with its playful warble and its retro groove that takes over the last half of the track. Aerial is certainly an album you'll need to be more patient with than other dubstep records (not unlike Pinch's Underwater Dancehall), but peel through the layers and you'll find a dense listening experience with a lot of repeat listening value.

Style: Dubstep, Techno
