Certainly one of the more original records you'll hear all year, Neon Neon is the second collaboration between Boom Bip and Gruff Rhys, and a far cry from the original collab on the song "Do's and Don'ts". A concept album about the inventor of the Delorean, Stainless Style's sound, like its subject matter, is straight out of the 80s. Beyond popping in a VHS copy of Back to the Future or Top Gun, I'm not sure there's much you can do to prepare yourself for the unabashed cheesiness. But if you give this record a chance, the narratives of Delorean's life backed by cheesy synths and only occasional interrupted by hip-hop tracks (with verses mostly about Delorean) become strangely enchanting with repeated listens. When the hip-hop comes in, it's not just an afterthought, and in some cases is very strong (as on the single "Trick for Treat"). This is music that is 100% crafted for the story Bip and Rhys are trying to tell, and I can't think of a better or more interesting way for them to have done it.

Style: Electronic Pop, Hip-Hop

RIYL: LCD Soundsystem, Simian Mobile Disco
