Experimental doesn't have to mean inaccesible. Case in point is El Guincho. Sample-based repetitions meet afrobeat, tropicalia, and a little bit of Latin funk in a tribal dancefloor setting. A record store might characterize this as world music, but there's too much under the covers here for that. The closest reference point here would certainly be last year's darling album Person Pitch, but whereas Panda Bear carefully crafted his rhythms and drew much inspiration from the electronic musicians listed in the inlet, Alegranza feels much more organic and unwieldy. This record is unapologetically upbeat and energetic in its entirety, whereas Person Pitch would experience large come downs from its sugar highs (not to its detriment though). The sort of energy level required for these tracks is tiring, and because of this, Alegranza can start to languish near the end, but this is a fascinating record coming seemingly out of nowhere, with required a gigantic burst of inspiration to even conceive.

Style: Experimental
