The lo-fi folk genre is definitely overplayed these days, but Bon Iver has found that balance of what’s played, and what’s implied, which makes his music more powerful than most folk musicians these days. Bon Iver’s voice is another unique aspect of his music. His voice recalls TV On The Radio on songs like “The Wolves (Act I And II),” but as soon as he starts singing in his falsetto voice, he switches to a deeper tone which brings to mind someone like M. Ward. The ambience, which lingers in the background of his songs, gives off a feeling of isolation, such as in “Skinny Love,” a tune packed with so much expression in his voice while the instruments are subdued in emotion, which is a prime example of what can be done with just a voice and a guitar.
