Mitchell Akiyama's newest excursion with Jenna Robertson (of Avia Gardner) and Tony Boggs (of Désormais) is a unification of indie/pop vocals blending into lo-fi noise. With the air of improvisation reigning all over, Letters Letters takes the clichés of pop music and turns them into an experimental novelty. Singing out of tune, constant rustling and the insistant repetition - these may stop Letters Letters from being a superstar indie act; but this album is one of the most interesting and experimental albums of the year. Xela's label takes on an indie and experimental neofolk three-piece band. Heading up the group, Mitchell Akiyama produces loosely structured rubber-band like rhythmic pieces accompanied by his screeching, almost constipated, distorted vocals along with a sweet and sexy whispering growl from Jenna Robertson. I know that observation may have sounded harsh, but this combination of sonic jam produces a desirable effect (otherwise I wouldn't listen to it over and over). Describing their style as "noise-pop" the trio (oops, forgot to mention Tony Boggs) uses "broken drum machines" and "fizzing analogue synthesizers" to bring back the days of sleazy, crunchy, non-categorized albums.

I really love this record. It kind of reminds me of The Dead Sea if there were male and female alternating vocals about unsettling topics over it. It's this collission of folk, indie, noise, and electronics only the Type label can seem to pull off with real conviction. I think this would be something the fans of Grizzly Bear, Benoit Pioulard, and the like could get behind. Definitely needs a few listens before it clicks though.
