The Kilimanjaro Darkjazz Ensemble is an experimental future jazz collaboration between Bong-Ra and Gideon Kiers. Their self-titled debut was a really rather impressive take on future jazz with a darkness no one else really approaches that sound with, of course accompanied with some noisiness you might expect from Bong-Ra. One of TKDE's strengths on its debut was its composure and its maturity, something you might not expect from the project of a Breakcore artist. The Mutations EP, well, a mutation of some of the tracks from their debut album, and more importantly a mutation of the sound, taking them in new sonic directions with vocals, more different types of instrumentation, and more styles of music. It's meant to be a bridge of the first album and the soon to be released sophomore effort. Acting as a taster, this couldn't make me more excited for the new album. There's even more depth on Mutations than on the album and more variety. Now a sextet, I think the band is really reaching its true potential here. They even drop the darkness a little bit here and go post rock at times, and it makes sense and works. They even head somewhat ambient with "Symmetry Of 6's", and it's probably the strongest track on the release. Long for an EP, this is more of a mini album and definitely one you should check out to sample what these guys are doing.

Style: Future Jazz, Post Rock
