I feel a bit silly recommending this album, as the current market value of one of these limited etched-steel double-disc packages is roughly $300 (I somehow managed to order one from Warp in time, but many were not so lucky). I almost want to call this the “proper” Quaristice album; the track lengths align with what one would typically expect from Autechre, and the 11 extended tracks (culled from an original 20) have the breathing space to unfold and transform. The variations (particularly “Altichyre”) are more often than not an improvement upon the originals, and the collection flows very consistently as an album; one can only hope that Warp will give ‘Versions’ a general release at some point in the future.

I agree with you to some degree. Quaristice for me was a bit of shock after Untilted. For some time, the duo had been creating works exponentially more challenging (sometimes possibly being difficult for the sake of being difficult) and lengthy. But, with Quaristice, they released tracks that were short and to the point. Not to say that it is easy listening by any means. Like most of the work it requires active participation by the listener. At first, listening to Quaristice was a daunting task. The 20 tracks were hard to digest completely in one sitting. However, after many listens, I began to notice certain points in tracks where I wished that they would expand on the ideas they had been working with. Thankfully they released versions as well. This was more the album I was expecting from them when Quaristice was first announced (when i saw it had 20 tracks I assumed it had to be a double album). I truly appreciate artists who create things like this for their fans.
