Kyle Hall's previous releases consist of forgettable house music, but he really pulled it off with this 12" for Hyperdub. I can detect maybe a slight dubstep influence (the drum signatures have a vague dubstep feel to them), but it's really more like a perfect sort of buoyant house/techno hybrid. Anyway the genre doesn't matter; this record is magic (magic!), and easily my favorite 12" of 2010 so far.
King Midas Sound is back with a new 12” right before the November release of “Waiting For You,” their full length album on Hyperdub. Ever since 2008’s “Cool Out” single I’ve been eagerly waiting for more work from the duo comprised of Kevin Martin aka The Bug and Roger Robinson. All three tracks on the 12” reach into the deep, dark depths of dub through filtered bass and percussion. The echo of the hi-hats, snare drums and Roger Robinson’s vocals is enough to give me chills down my spine. This music is truly deep and dark, yet somehow soulful. It might be a stretch, but I’d even go as far to say that I see similarities in the feel of the music between King Midas Sound and Thom Yorke’s gorgeous solo efforts. I’ve got a lot of excitement built up inside me for the full length.
L.A. hip-hop producer and frequent collaborator with Flying Lotus as Flyamsam releases a follow-up to his debut album Rap Beats on Kode9's previously dubstep only label Hyperdub. It's no secret Kode9's been smitten with the bass-heavy hip-hop sound for a while now, working with Flying Lotus on a RinseFM set and big-upping Rustie at every opportunity. With Samiyam, Kode9 is showcasing one of the emerging stars of the increasingly vibrant L.A. hop-hop scene. Samiyam's aesthetic is not much different than frequent collaborator Flying Lotus's early work, but Samiyam is more consistently upbeat and less moody. Samiyam goes a bit more experimental with "Cheesecake Backslap", but ends compromising some of the best parts of the track. He's more comfortable on tracks like "Moon Shoes", where he's perfected the sound of L.A.-based instrumental hip-hop, where the production is so interesting an MC would only hinder the track. Be on the lookout for more from this talent.
Mysterious dubstep producer Burial returns with a surprise 12” on the Hyperdub label that continues his journey into the London underground with plenty of bass, reverb, and old soul samples. While not necessarily a progression of his sound, this, along with the excellent “Unite” off the Box of Dub compilation, shows Burial will not be a one album wonder. If you can get past the similar vibe and sample re-usage, this is highly recommended.
