The apt description for this record is "post rock with horns." You'll hear it in every review, and with good reason, because that's what this record is. But I'm here to tell you that it's actually good post rock, very skillfuly attempted and executed, without the longwindedness or pretension that is often associated with post rock. The horns definitely give the album a jazz feel, which puts it in line with a lot of jazz-influenced post rock. It's not as experimental as, say, Tortoise and not as subtle as I'm Not a Gun, but I would definitely put The Drift in the same arena as those bands. In the end, I think The Drift has appeal for any fan of post rock or jazz, and can maybe even bring in some fans that maybe aren't patient enough to appreciate either or. A skillfull effort worth checking out for sure.
