One of many recent Animal Collective-related releases; these guys have had an extremely good year! I wish I could say that “Strawberry Jam” (an Avey Tare-centric record, for better or worse) is better than Panda Bear’s “Person Pitch,” but, this is sadly not the case. There are some interesting ideas in “SJ,” and it’s certainly worth picking up, but the wild experimentalism of the band’s earlier material seems more subdued or flattened, here; there are a couple outstanding tracks, but for the most part it’s a watered-down version of the off-kilter-ness I’ve come to expect.
