Grizzly Bear took a while to grow on me; I heard ‘Horn of Plenty’ (Droste’s solo bedroom recordings) years ago, and wondered what the fuss was about. It wasn’t until I saw them live that I decided to give their newer stuff a chance, but even then, it took months for me to appreciate the depth and beauty of their songwriting; the four-part harmonies and intricate song structures are very subtle (and almost hidden, at times). Apart from a couple forgettable covers by CSS and Band of Horses, the ‘Friend EP’ is surprisingly consistent throughout; with some new tracks and a couple (very) reworked versions of older tracks, all of which add up to LP-length at an EP price.

Style: Indie Rock, Folk

RIYL: Nick Drake, The Shins
