The second solo record from a member of Deerhunter, Lotus Plaza is guitarist's Lockett Pundt's solo project, and this is the debut release for the project besides some mp3's on the Deerhunter blog. The sonic palette of Lotus Plaza isn't a far cry from singer Bradford Cox's solo project Atlas Sound. Dreamy atmospheres, lazy faded vocals, and that ambience you rarely get from indie rock bands. It's hard to write about such records, because it's just something to experience. There's such a plethora of sounds that none really are singled. The various sounds congeal to form a singular ambience that is entrancing and the exact opposite of background noise - it's foreground noise. The Floodlight Collective really shows that Deerhunter is more than just Bradford Cox, and you begin to see how Pundt's presence in the band affects its sound in a positive way. Just keep on soaking in the Deerhunter love. Whether it's the band or solo projects revolving around, it always seem to be worth listening to.

Style: Indie Rock, Ambient

RIYL: Atlas Sound, Panda Bear

I was interested to read somewhere that it was actually Lockett who helped to steer early Deerhunter away from noise/rock into more straightforwardly beautiful stuff. Even Bradford's early solo work is a lot more dissonant and annoying than his later stuff ...
