I often wonder how indie rock manages to stay interesting; it seems like every sound in every niche subgenre has been done to death, there’s such a narrow range of expression - and yet, within these narrow confines, Nick Harte (formerly of the Brunettes) has managed to create one of the most listenable and unique records of the year. Or, to be more precise, DFA label head James Murphy has created it, by condensing a couple of Harte’s earlier import-only albums for this, his self-titled US debut. Harte has perfected a kind of lo-fi hybrid of Pavement, The Cure, and "Loveless," if that makes any sense; bittersweet lyrics, fantastic drumming (Harte was originally a drummer, which might explain it) and catchy guitar hooks.
