The trip-hop movement was really just two bands: Massive Attack and Portishead. There was a magic to their sound that had many thinking this was the future of pop music, but when other artists attempted their own versions of the sound, they inevitably had to drift into downtempo or drum'n'bass to keep a listener's interest over the course of an album. So when Portishead disbanded and Massive Attack took an extended hiatus in the late 90s, there was no way for the sound to really continue. But wait! Portishead just decided to re-group, and they just released a heck of an album out of nowhere. Is trip-hop back from the dead? I'll let you decide, but this is no lame reunion record. Beth's voice has lost no luster with maturity, and the production is sharper than ever. This is some morbid music, but that's how it should be. Maybe more trip-hop in spirit than actual production, regardless, it's great to see these innovators back in action.
