Hip-hop producers 40 Winks return with their follow-up to 2007's Sound Puzzle on the now defunct Merck label. The Lucid Effect is more of the laid-back jazz-influenced hip-hop Padmo and Weedy are known for, but this is a more consistent effort than Sound Puzzle, and 40winks seemed to have refined their base of beats that are playful and don't take themselves too seriously. With The Lucid Effect, the duo seems to be developing their ideas for more thoroughly for successful tracks, and not just sounds. In that respect, I think this album is a lot more accessible, and a more rewarding listen. Again, nothing groundbreaking, but a step forward from a talented duo, and a worthy listen for anyone who respects the beats.

Style: Instrumental Hip-Hop

RIYL: Deceptikon, Dr. Who Dat?
