Scott Herren, seemingly worried about keeping up his reputation as prolific after albums from three different aliases this year, has released a new 12" EP on Warp following up the return to form that was Everything She Touched Turned Ampexian. This EP is simply killer. "Overkill Choir" is a Vocal Studies throwback with vocoded vocals and a much slower tempo than a lot of his recent work. The vocals surf over the too cool for school rhythm, and over the second half of the track the beat transforms into a Folk Songs style melody. This should be a big hit for Herren's long time fans, and alone is worth the price of admission. "Relief Choir" takes things on an even slower path, with a slightly less manipulated vocal leading things over some gentle jazz. A longer version of "Preparation Kids Choir" follows this, and isn't really any different from the album version besides the extended length. I'll admit I don't really know why this is here. "Always Alone Choir" is another new track, and a strange one at that. A pleasant vocal is gradually interrupted by an ominous drum beat and some slick beat work before it slows itself down and reforms as sparse vocal groans and a shimmering melody. Closing out the 12" is a stripped and slowed down version of "Simple Loop Choir" from the album, and again, it isn't much different from the album version. I think Scott just wanted to pull all of his similar vocals tracks on the same EP to display a theme. Repeated tracks or not, this is great stuff.
