Sam Baker aka Samiyam has been around for a minute, notably as half of the FLYamSAM duo with collaborator Flying Lotus. Rap Beats Vol. 1 is Samiyam's debut release as well as the debut release for Flying Lotus's digital label, Brainfeeder. Its about time Sam is getting a proper solo release, with much hype built up around him, Rap Beats Vol. 1 definitely lives up to the hype. Full of chopped up slanted off-beat beats and Nintendo-esque melodies, Rap Beats. Vol. 1 is an instrumental beat tape full of gems. The cohesiveness of the release is nothing more than a collection of 23 instrumentals lasting no longer than two minutes each. Sam is also doing original cover art for each CD. Look out for a release on the UK's Hyperdub label.
