Full of dusty Rhodes electric piano, handclaps, and deep basslines, Samon Kawamura's beats are nothing but warm and astral beat journeys into the subconscious. The Berlin-based Kawamura creates his sound spanning over decades: "from Pete Rock to Pharoah Sanders, from Madlib to Marvin Gaye or Moondog, from J Dilla to Debussy," says his myspace bio, the debut release "Translations" is full of atmospheric grooves that echo those listed. It is interesting to point out that while most beatmakers concentrate on sampling and chopping sounds as their starting point, Kawamura concentrates on basing his work around his piano playing. Every track is full of warmth and melody that makes listening great for headphones. While it is a very solid debut, my only gripe is that "Translations" doesn't quite pick up in stride. However, there is nothing wrong with that, the atmospheric and dreamy qualities of "Translations" is very rewarding for the entire listen.
