After last year’s interesting (though spotty) collection of ambient tracks, “Digital Shades Vol. 1,” Anthony Gonzales has now come out with a proper follow-up to 2005’s sprawling widescreen epic, “Before the Dawn Heals Us.” “Saturdays = Youth” is a bit more tightly controlled than “Before the Dawn,” and reminds me of classic New Order. If anything, Gonzales seems to have reached beyond early 90s bands like Ride and Slowdive and back into the 80s, to new wave and post-punk, yet with all the fuzzy shoegaze signifiers intact. He’s also left in the overearnest sampled vocals, for better or worse. The strength of tracks like "Couleurs" and "Graveyard Girl" outweigh any misgivings, though; this is a great album!

Style: Shoegaze, Indie Rock

RIYL: New Order, Slowdive
