Kieran Hebden returns with a mini-album, but this time he's lending his style to the techno movement, and with supremely intriguing results. Anyone following Kieran's career knows he's a master craftsman of weaving instruments together with electronics, but it's fascinating how that formula of live drumming and guitars fits into an, albeit experimental, techno template. Perhaps 2005's song of the year "Smile Around The Face" hinted at this direction, but whereas that was an appetizer on an otherwise surprisingly mediocre meal, Ringer is an entree of the type of genre-bending experimentalism Kieran has always been capable of, and the single tracks are variations on a theme.
